"He had tried to register the name "Crime" as his online screen name at a major poker site. I fell for it and asked why he wanted to be called Crime. His reply: "Because Crime doesn't pay!"

Great quote from Linda Johnson from a recent cardplayer magazine article. You boys should read it.

Xxxxxxx: 9h 9c 9s 9d

Best starting hand EVER!!

Thursday, April 08, 2004

Good ol TEC never disapoints. AQ suited is just no match for a qj offsuit (75% to 25% preflop 3-1 odds in your favor) when you go all in and you know he is playing garbage.
Life of poker.

Lost 2 hands today in sit n go's with top pairs and good kickers to flushes against 45 offsuit and q6 offsuit respectively.
Life of poker I guess.

Even lost a green bill on the bigger o8b tables with trip aces and a2 but ya make bad calls and ya pay for them. Don't expect old man river to bail ya out either even though he seems to help others so readily at whim.
Again life of poker.

Moral of the story is some nights you can be johny f***ing chan and it won't help you and the frustration builds. Did I mention I finished 4th in the sit n go :). Online poker is gonna have swings and I still have made alot more money in the long run compared to the measely 25$ investment it cost me. The only measure of how well you are doing is how much you are ahead regardless of where it is from. It is so easy to remember in great detail how you outplayed a goon or a tool and took there milk money but if you let 1 bad night or even a bad stretch ruin what really is a fun and challenging game that you both love and hate at the same time I think the loss is yours. It is hard to play through the frustration some nights and by all means I know what rich is going through and I wanna help ease the pain because I have been there trust me. It is hard when you play better cards, better hands and the chips still go the other persons way.

Four things help ease the frustration

1. Ya gotta play within your bankroll. I can't stress this enough. You can take losses in stride and it doesn't really piss you off as much because you still have a lot of barrels to work with. 10 bucks may not seem like a lot but when your bankroll is 50$ or less it is a huge chunk. Play within your limits so the losses that will happen due to luck will be minimized and eventually you will get to the big show.

2. Unlike poker at the home games, online poker is and will always be a game that is based on PURE probability and patience. You can be like Jason and lose with AA in holdem every time. You can play the best and lose, this is the nature of the beast. The beautiful part of online poker is that if you make higher percentage plays all the time because you have learnt the skills to make consistant calls, all the bad luck in the world can't stop you from making money in the long run. Let me repeat long run. Patience is needed to get to the hand where you make your money. Building a bankroll is a marathon not a sprint. Many people forget this and pay the price.

3. Don't fool yourselfs for why you play. My personal reason to play is for money even though at this point it isn't huge ammounts but it doesn't mean you treat it that way. I don't play to have fun but I am lucky I enjoy playing poker even with all the bull**** that goes on from time to time. Once you figure out your motives, you begin to look at the game differently and a small change in mind set can do wonders for a game. If your not enjoying playing stop playing for awhile until you can change the attitude in your head. If you just plainly don't enjoy it because it gets frustrating than online poker isn't for you and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. As stupid as it sounds without a positive mind set you might as well give your money away and hopefully to me :)

4. Confidence, confidence, confidence. Nothing guts the inside of a poker player like having no confidence. Luckily there are cures available by prescription from Dr. Monkey. Play chip tables, penny tables and so on are full of so many people who I think may have a hard time walking and talking at the same time. Most of you who read this already have my respect as a poker player and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with your game. If you lack confidence, you lack the balls needed to make plays and make marginal hands pay off and define what makes you good players. When poker has got you down nothing puts a smile on your face like flopping a wheel against stupid americans who pay you off again and again and again and again. It does wonders for confidence and than your game magically works again. Amazing how that works.

In closing this isn't a direct reponse to my good friend Rich but it is a reminder to all people who play online poker and why you shouldn't let it get you down. There are good and bad parts to any game/hobby. If your sick of bad beats play chess. Than you can never bitch about the guy getting a lucky wind gust to take out your bishop. Play because you want to play and you enjoy it for what it is. Makes playing worthwhile and not seen as a chore.

Here's a good hand to bitch about. I had AK diamondswith KQ spades. I don't remember what the community cards were exactly, but other high cards anyway. So anyways, there were 2 spades and 2 diamonds on the board, and I needed any hight or low card to finish off a high straight, and any of the remaining spades or diamonds to get a flush. Plus there was a pair on the board so any kinf would give me a full house. I call a fairly large bet (about 25 cents at the penny tables), and a 2 of clubs comes up. Well I folded faster than Superman on laundry day after that card. You figure with so many outs, that I could catch a break, but no, UB hates me, which is why it fucks me everytime I think I'm in the money.

One other post for the day:
XXXXXXXX wins $.62 with four queens.
Always wanted to win with 4 of a kind, and I finally did. too bad only one other person left on the river when I got the 4th queen.
After an hour and a half of nothing play o8b, I finally get a hand

XXXXXXX wins 465 with four aces (high).
XXXXXXX wins 465 with 8 7 3 2 A (low).
Then the next hand I get this:
XXXXXXX wins 365 with full house, aces full of nines.
This all after I play almost nothing, and raising, I get a bunch of callers. You'd think they'd notice that I was the only one folding hands and I was starting to raise. You'd think they would fold or something, but no. They're all stupid, but that's cool because then I get to finally make some money.
Up over a thousand chips now for the day. It took a lot of patience, but it paid off. If only it was for money.
Oh well, starting to get this stupid game, so I'm off to the real money tables while I'm still cocky.
Tough break by the way Rich, I feel your pain. But you took my money last week, so I only feel some of your pain :).

Xxxxxxx wins the main pot $6.85 with 5 4 3 2 A (low).
Xxxxxxx wins side pot #1 $9.85 with flush, queen high (high).
Xxxxxxx wins side pot #1 $9.80 with 5 4 3 2 A (low).
Xxxxxxx wins side pot #2 $9.75 with flush, queen high (high).
Xxxxxxx wins side pot #2 $9.75 with 5 4 3 2 A (low).

Took all but $6.85 from a $53.85 pot. Gotta love o8b. This hand made up for all the losses I suffered earlier at the higher limits. Oh well back to the grind.
